Using PlayOverlay

Line-ups

Enter or paste each team's players, pick goal scorers from the squad, put a line-up on air, and let the display rotate through screens by itself before kick-off and at half-time.

Line-ups are optional. Until a team has players, its line-up screen, the scorer question and the Substitutions tab don't appear, and PlayOverlay works exactly as it does without them. Add a squad when you have one, and you get a line-up screen for that team, a tap-to-pick list of its goal scorers and a substitution log.

Entering the players

The Match Settings panel open beside the dashboard, showing the home team's line-up of numbered players, each with a Starts box, and the Add player and Paste a list buttons
The Line-up section of a team's panel in Match Settings.

Open Match Settings from the people icon on the dashboard. Each team's panel has a Line-up section.

  • Add player gives you a row with a shirt number and a name. The number can be up to three characters, so 9, 00 and GK all work.
  • Press Enter in a row to move straight on to the next player, so you can type a whole squad without touching the mouse.
  • The Starts box marks a player as starting. New players start; untick the substitutes.
  • The bin icon at the end of a row removes that player.
  • A team can have up to 30 players. The count next to the buttons shows how many you have.

Pasting a team sheet

If the team sheet arrives as a message or a spreadsheet, press Paste a list and paste it in. Put one player on each line, with the shirt number first if you have it:

Team sheet
1 Jack Doyle
2 Harry Cole
3 Ben Oduya
9 Ali Smith
GK Sam Reid

Add players adds them to the end of the line-up. Blank lines are skipped, and a number written as #9, 9. or 9 - works too, as does a list copied from a spreadsheet with the number and name in separate columns. A line without a number becomes a player without one. Anything past the 30th player is left out.

Squads saved with your clubs

Save as club stores the squad along with the club's name, colours and logo, so you only type it once. Choosing the club from Load a saved club next week brings the players back too. A saved fixture in Save / Restore Match Settings keeps both line-ups as well. See club presets.

Starters and the bench

Every player has a Starts box, ticked by default. Untick it for the substitutes. The line-up screen then shows the starters on the pitch with a smaller Bench group underneath, and the scorer question lists the pitch before the bench. Any number of starters works: a five-a-side squad or a rugby fifteen is set up the same way.

Picking the scorer

The Who scored? question over the dashboard after a Winchester goal: the players on the pitch as large tiles, the bench beneath, and Not a goal, Own goal and No scorer buttons
Tapping a team's goal key asks who scored. The score bug is already updated; the banner goes out once you pick.

Once a team has players, tapping its Goal key updates the score bug and asks who scored: the players on the pitch as large tiles, the bench beneath, plus No scorer, Own goal and Not a goal for a mis-tap. The goal banner goes out once you choose, with the number and the name, for example 9 Ali Smith. Escape or a tap outside counts as no scorer, so the question can never hold up the match.

Tap a goal in the Goals tab to change its scorer later. Goals from a keyboard shortcut, the Stream Deck or the phone never wait for the question; their banner goes out at once and the scorer can be added from the log. Both the question and the automatic banners can be switched off under Goals and banners in Window Settings. The end screen lists every scorer either way. See goals and scorers.

Substitutions

The substitution picker over the dashboard: Coming off 10 Marcus Lane, Coming on 16 Nathan Brooks chosen from the bench, with Confirm substitution lit green
A substitution in two steps: who is coming off, then who is coming on from the bench.

The Substitutions tab appears once a team has a line-up. Tap the team, pick who is coming off from the players on the pitch, then who is coming on from the bench, and confirm. Confirm and make another keeps the picker open for a double or triple change at the same stoppage.

Each change is logged with its minute. The two players swap places on the line-up screen, and a banner like the goal banner announces the change on air. A mistake is put right by removing the entry, which puts both players back where they were; undo works too.

The line-up screens

The Home Line-up screen: Winchester F.C. above eleven players on the pitch, each with a shirt number in the club's red, and a smaller Bench group of three beneath
The Home Line-up screen, with the starters on the pitch and the bench beneath.

When a team has players, Home Line-up or Away Line-up appears with the other screen keys. Each shows the team's name, logo and colours above the players on the pitch and their shirt numbers, in one column for up to eleven players and two columns for more, with the bench in a smaller group beneath when there is one.

The same screens are available in two other places:

Rotating screens

The Rotate screens set-up over the dashboard: the screens to show ticked in rotation order, seconds per screen and the half-time start
The Rotate screens key sits under the screen keys; the gear beside it opens this set-up.

Before kick-off and at half-time there is often nothing to do but leave a graphic up. The Rotate screens key under the screen keys cycles the display through screens you choose, so you can put the laptop down and the stream still has something worth watching.

  1. Press the gear beside the key to open the set-up. Under Screens to show, tick the screens you want: the match title, the line-ups, the score bug, the scoreboard, penalties, the end screen and any full-screen graphics you have added. Choose at least two.
  2. Set Seconds per screen, anything from 3 to 600. The default is 10.
  3. Press Rotate screens. The key stays lit, with the interval, while the screens take turns in the order the set-up lists them.

The rotation stops as soon as you take over. Choosing a screen yourself, whether on the dashboard, the Stream Deck or the phone remote, stops it. So does starting the clock, pressing New match or restoring a match. Pressing the lit key stops it too.

Starting by itself at half-time

Switch on Start automatically at half-time and the rotation starts by itself whenever you stop the clock for a break with more of the match to come. That covers half-time, the breaks between periods with the generic timer, and the break before extra time. It never starts at full time, so the final score stays on air.

Kicking off the next half starts the clock, which stops the rotation. With Auto switch screens on start and stop turned on, the score bug then goes back on air as usual.
